Past support
Hurricane Helene
500+ local families served · Hundreds of first responders supported · Two stores converted to drop locations
When Hurricane Helene devastated Western North Carolina, all three Pocket Change Laundry locations operating at the time were initially forced to close. With widespread power, water, road, and infrastructure disruptions across the region, access to something as basic as clean laundry quickly became a challenge for thousands of our neighbors.
Approximately two weeks after the storm, our Hendersonville location was able to return to service. Our Asheville and Candler locations remained offline, so we converted both into laundry drop-off and collection points. Laundry was transported to Hendersonville, processed, and returned to the communities those stores served.
Through this effort, Pocket Change Laundry provided laundry assistance to more than 500 local families impacted by the storm.
As recovery operations expanded, we also began serving the people working around the clock to rebuild Western North Carolina. Hundreds of first responders, utility linemen, emergency personnel, and relief workers received laundry service completely free of charge.
Demand quickly exceeded normal operating capacity. We brought in temporary overnight staff and continued processing laundry after normal hours, allowing our Hendersonville facility to support customers from all three communities while also helping the crews responding to the disaster.
For us, Hurricane Helene demonstrated what being a local business is supposed to mean. Our stores are part of these communities, our employees live here, and our customers are our neighbors. When Western North Carolina needed help, we used the resources we had available to provide it.
Sometimes doing laundry is about more than laundry.
